Jyotishka Datta has received NSF Career Award

Jyotishka Datta has received the NSF CAREER Award for his project ``CAREER: Heavy-Tailed Priors for Robust Bayesian Inference in Ecology, Machine Learning, and Astronomy." This five-year award supports the development of scalable Bayesian methods using heavy-tailed priors for high-dimensional count and compositional data, addressing challenges such as sparsity, zero-inflation, and complex dependence structures. The project will advance applications in independent component estimation, astronomical distance measurement, ecology, criminology, microbiomics, and genomics, while also providing theoretical guarantees and open-source software. Dr. Datta will integrate this research with education and outreach, including curriculum development, graduate-level texts, student training, and K–12 engagement to promote statistical thinking.
