- Alexandra L. Hanlon, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science, and Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, at Virginia Tech. She is currently a Co-Director of the Research Methods Core within the NIH funded CTSA cross-state collaborative entitled “Integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV)”.
- For more than two decades, Dr. Hanlon has led collaborative research within the health sciences. She has served as co-investigator or lead biostatistician on numerous funded research projects, including prospective and retrospective studies within the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease, stress, sleep, communication, violence, gerontology, women’s health, obesity, biobehavioral studies, and care transitions. She has authored over 350 peer-reviewed clinical or biomedical research publications through her collaborations. Her efforts focus on leading and informing study design and sample size estimation, data management and statistical programming, data visualization, analyses, and dissemination efforts. She has served as a scientific reviewer for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute since its inception in 2012, primarily on the Improving Health Systems and Pragmatic Trials panels, and on various data safety monitoring committees. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and recently completed a term on the ASA's Board of Directors.
- She obtained her doctorate degree from Temple University, with emphasis on hierarchal nonlinear mixed-effects modeling for classification of disease trajectories using biomarkers observed over time. As such, she leads a team of data scientists to apply contemporary and sophisticated methods to address and translate research questions within a team science framework, including longitudinal data analysis, propensity score modeling, and machine learning methods.
